7 steps to find relief through knee pain management
Because we want to help people find relief from their knee pain without narcotics or surgery, we’ve put together this helpful guide with a few techniques you can try out!

Ice and heat
If you’ve injured your knee, chances are that you’ll notice.
Whether you are no longer able to hold weight on your leg at all or you’re experiencing a lot of pain, you will want to take this seriously.
The first step that you should take is to remove pressure from your leg by laying down with your knee propped up on a pillow.
When you have injured your knee, you will want to start off your knee pain management by elevating your knee to help control the swelling.
After you complete that quick step, you’ll want to begin alternating between heat and ice to help with pain and swelling. This will also begin to promote healing.
Heat therapy helps to relax stiff or injured muscles, which stimulates blood flow and circulation to the area.
You can use heat by soaking in a warm bath or, if you can’t get to one, placing a rag wet with warm water onto your knee.
Alternating with ice is important and you can do this by using an ice pack or even frozen vegetables and placing them gently on your knee.
Make sure that you aren’t leaving the ice or heat on for more than 15-30 minutes at a time in order to not damage your skin. We recommend moving the heat and ice packs every few minutes to check on your skin and cover more of the damaged area!
The use of over-the-counter anti-inflammatories is fairly standard and a part of knee pain management.
You have the option of taking non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) at first to help manage your pain and inflammation.
From there, there is a good variety of gels and creams that you can apply directly to your knee to manage the pain.
Any cream or gel with capsaicin will be extremely useful for knee pain management because it creates warmth and a slight burning sensation on your knee.
These creams are very effective and can offer relief for people with knee injuries.

Many of us spend our days busy and running from place to place.
But when you have a knee injury and are experiencing pain, it’s important to take a step back from the normal hustle and bustle.
Instead, make sure that you are resting and staying as still as possible to allow your knee to heal. Resting means that you are not irritating your injury and have a better chance of an easy recovery.
Gentle physical therapy
Once you have rested and feel like your pain is being managed a little bit, you will want to begin gentle physical therapy.
These gentle stretches and range-of-motion exercises can bring strength back to your knee and help it with normal motions that will allow you walk.
Some range of motion exercises include knee raises and slowly extending and curling your leg as you would with walking.
Use a brace to support your knee
Once your knee is able to handle motion, you can begin to slowly ease back into your regular tasks.
This means walking the minimum amount of time to allow your knee to continue to heal without irritation. It will also let you minimize the risk for re-injuring your knee as you move around with an unstable joint.

Get the right kind of support
Once you are able to be mobile, you can combat any residual pain by getting the right kinds of shoe inserts.
Orthotics are support pads that you can slide into your shoes to help keep your foot in the right position. Because the way your foot sits does change the way your knee functions, you can experience pain relief from these simple inserts!
